EAL
English as an Additional Language
At our school, we value the rich diversity of languages and cultures within our community. Children who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) bring a wealth of experiences, perspectives and skills that enhance learning for everyone.
We are committed to ensuring that all EAL children feel welcomed, supported and confident as they develop their English language skills and access the full school curriculum.
Supporting EAL Learners
We recognise that learning in an additional language can take time, and we provide a range of strategies to help children develop both language skills and subject knowledge. Our approach focuses on making learning accessible while building confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.
Support may include:
-
Adapted teaching strategies to support language development
-
Visual aids and scaffolding to support understanding
-
Opportunities to develop speaking and listening skills
-
Targeted support where appropriate
-
Encouraging children to value and maintain their home language
Inclusive Learning Environment
Our classrooms promote a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to communicate, collaborate and participate fully in learning. Staff use inclusive teaching approaches to ensure that EAL children can access lessons alongside their peers.
We also celebrate the many languages, cultures and backgrounds represented within our school community. By recognising and valuing this diversity, we help children develop pride in their identity while building respect and understanding among all learners.
Working with Families
We work closely with families to support pupils who are learning English as an additional language. Clear communication and strong partnerships help ensure that children feel supported both at school and at home.
Our aim is to help every EAL pupil feel confident, included and able to achieve their full potential as they develop their English language skills.
