Forest School

At Shefford Lower School, we are proud to integrate Forest School into our curriculum, giving children the opportunity to learn and explore in a natural environment. This approach encourages curiosity, independence, and creativity, while supporting the development of practical and social skills across a variety of settings. Throughout their Forest School journey, children continually build and expand their skills during every session.
Holistic teaching lies at the heart of our sessions. Through outdoor play and learning and individual learning experiences, children build resilience, confidence, and self-esteem, all while deepening their knowledge and appreciation of the natural world around them.
“Bringing nature into the classroom can kindle a fascination and passion for the diversity of life on earth and can motivate a sense of responsibility to protect it.”David Attenborough.
During Forest School, children develop a wide range of skills through carefully designed programmes. Each child takes part in two half termly programmes, progressing through the five key areas of learning. While the levels are loosely linked to year groups, progression is tailored to each child’s experience and ability.
The five key skill areas include:
- Knots – learning practical and safe knot-tying techniques.
- Nature ID and Habitats – identifying plants, animals, and understanding ecosystems.
- Tool Use – developing safe and confident use of tools.
- Fire Building and Lighting – learning to safely build and manage fires.
- Teamwork – collaborating effectively with others through shared tasks and challenges.
The benefits of Forest School are extensive, with research and experience showing significant positive impacts on children’s confidence, resilience, self-esteem, and overall well-being.
Our sessions take place within our own forest school grounds or at our local Chicksands Woods.
